I have a photograph

Time it was, and what a time it was,
it was a time of innocence, a time of confidences
Long ago, it must be, I have a photograph
Preserve your memories; They're all that's left you

~ Bookends, Simon & Garfunkel

Actually I have hundreds of photographs of Doug. Laughing, serious, working, playing, eating, sleeping, you name it.

This one is one of my favorites though. We were camping somewhere. It was evening, and we were lounging in the RV as Doug planned our next adventure. He loved to study maps. His glasses are halfway down his face (he would never take them off to read.) I love his smile; the light in his eyes, his presence. I love ... him ...still.

His absence is surreal. This moment was real. I know it was. I have a photograph.

When I look at these pictures, I am transported back to happier times. He is alive. I feel heartache, but also love...and gratitude.

  • After her father died, Lucinda Rosenfield wrote "I couldn't believe I'd never see his face again....The loss of my father and the resulting disorientation made me crave paper photos in a way I hadn't in years....They were no substitute for him, but at least they could be touched and held - and beheld - unlike my father, who was now unreachable.... I came upon [a photograph] of my father from our last vacation together....It's not a particularly flattering photo.... Even so, the image electrified me. My father looked so shockingly alive."
